5 Tips to Help You Focus on Homework

Imagine having a huge amount of homework that needs to get done tonight, but no matter how hard you try you can’t seem to focus. Perhaps your mind wanders when you’re working on a math problem or your phone rings when you’re writing a book report. If this situation appears familiar and you’ve had trouble focusing on your homework, you might want to try these 5 tips to regain focus and get your homework finished:

  1. Make a Plan.

List all of your assignments and figure out how much you will need to spend on each, which one will take the longest and which one is the most important. Organize your assignments so that you complete the hardest assignments first. Working on homework is less tiring when you start from the most difficult and move towards the easiest.

  2. Eat a Healthy Snack.

It’s difficult to study and concentrate when you are hungry. Most experts agree that having a healthy and light snack before settling down to do a mental task will help you focus much quicker and for a longer period of time. Try to stay away from sweats so that you don’t crash hours later.

  3. Remove Distractions.

There are a number of things that can be distracting in your life. From cell phones to television to the internet, each of these can keep you from your undivided attention on your homework. In order to focus on your assignment and finish quicker, you should completely disconnect and shut down all of your time-wasters. They’ll always be there when you’re finished.

  4. Play Some Music.

There are several studies that show certain types of music can help stimulate the brain and increase focus. It’s probably not a good idea to go for anything with a heavy beat or lyrics you will sing along to. The best choice is classical or opera. In addition to being calming these types of music can help drown out distracting outside noises.

  5. Plan and Take Breaks.

Plan to take a ten to fifteen minute break every hour or so and set an alarm to ensure that you actually take it. Taking breaks is a proven method to regain focus and give your mind a rest. It’s important that you leave your workspace and preferably leave the room. You should spend your break relaxed and doing something you enjoy. Perhaps this is a great time to check for missed calls.
